18-Year-Old Driver Charged With DWI Following Fatal Car Accident in High Point

A tragic and preventable traffic accident claimed the life of a local Piedmont Triad resident earlier this week. A teenage driver is under arrest following a deadly two-vehicle accident that took place in High Point, North Carolina in the early morning of Monday, October 12th.

This terrible accident took place at around 2:15 am Monday morning near the intersection of Eastchester Drive and Deep River Road in High Point. Police announced that the intoxicated driver who caused the accident was heading south on Eastchester Road when he swerved into the opposite lane of traffic and collided with an unsuspecting motorist.

The intoxicated driver sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle died a short time later at a local hospital.

The intoxicated driver now faces serious charges for his reckless and negligent behavior, including driving while intoxicated (DWI) and driving while consuming alcohol under 21. Police are still investigating the accident, and have announced that more charges against the driver may be forthcoming.

Despite the valiant efforts of local law enforcement and many drunk driving awareness organizations, intoxicated drivers still pose a major threat to motorists on North Carolina roads. The statistics about this problem are disturbing, and show that much more work needs to be done in order to prevent drunk drivers from causing these types of tragic, and preventable, car accidents:

  • In 2013, 29% of all traffic fatalities in North Carolina involved an intoxicated driver.
  • In North Carolina, 371 people were killed in alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2013.
  • According to the Center for Disease Control, a person is killed in a motor vehicle accident involving a drunk driver once every 52 minutes in the United States.
  • In 2013, more 21-24 year old drivers were involved in fatal alcohol-related accidents than any other age group.
