Construction Accidents Cause Injury and Claim Lives

Construction accidents happen often, and workers need to be as careful and as aware of potential dangers as possible. Many construction sites include highways, streets and large work areas that involve a lot of movement, traffic and equipment.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol recently shut down Interstate 40 for hours after a construction worker was killed when a pick-up truck suddenly veered out of his lane, striking multiple hazard cones and three construction workers.

The three construction workers were rushed to area hospitals. Sadly, Flavio Jaimes, one of the workers, died in route to the hospital.

Unfortunately, these types of accidents are not a rare occurrence. Construction accidents happen every day and workers need to take every precaution possible to stay safe.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), there were 4,175 workers killed on the job in 2012; 806 of them were construction workers.

The most common causes of injury and death on construction sites are:

–          Vehicle accidents
–          Falls
–          Struck by object
–          Electrocutions
–          Pinned between objects
–          Scaffolding accidents
–          Explosions
–          Machinery malfunctions

One of the largest industries in the country is the construction industry.  There are thousands of workers who risk their lives daily to build our nation’s office buildings, housing developments and roadways. With so many different types of work and construction occurring simultaneously, accidents can easily happen.

There is large machinery, loud noise and heavy equipment on most construction sites.  Workers need to be as cautious as possible in these chaotic environments, and should follow these safety tips to avoid injury:

–          Stay aware of your environment
–          Wear protective clothing and eyewear
–          Make sure the site you are working on has the correct licenses and permits
–          Make sure appropriate Workers Compensation insurance is available

The fact is, accidents happen. Every day construction workers are at risk of serious injury, and at times, injuries occur due to the negligent acts others.
