A recent nationwide poll known as the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index had some very complementary things to say about the city of Winston-Salem, NC. This annual study, which polls thousands of Americans from all over the country, looks at the 100 most populous metro areas in the U.S and uses a series of strict criteria to determine what cities have the highest overall quality of life.
It gives us a great deal of pleasure at Daggett Shuler, North Carolina Injury and Disability law firm, to announce that Winston-Salem, NC was ranked number 10 in the entire country in terms of community Well-Being!
This Gallup poll ranks municipalities on a scale of 0 to 100 in terms of the overall well-being of their populations. For the purposes of the study, a rating of 100 is the highest possible “Well-Being Index” score a city could receive, while a score of 0 would be the lowest possible rating.
This Well-Being Index is calculated using data collected from 176,000 interviews with adults across all 50 states. Participants in the study are asked a series of questions related to 5 essential elements of well-being, and their responses are then tallied to calculate the final Well-Being Index score.
The 5 essential elements of community Well-Being as defined by this study are:
- Purpose: “Liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals.”
- Social: “Having supportive relationships and love in your life.”
- Financial: “Managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security.”
- Community: “Liking where you live, feeling safe and having pride in your community.”
- Physical: “Having good health and enough energy to get things done daily.”
This study finds that in cities like Winston-Salem with high Well-Being Index scores, residents are far more likely to exercise often, have access to fresh, healthy food choices, have fewer chronic health conditions and feel a sense of safety and pride in where they live. The common theme among cities in the Top 10 of this national poll is a strong sense of shared community support, overall mental and physical fitness, and strong local economies.
