Safe Sober Prom Night Works to Educate Young People About the Devastating Consequences of Drinking and Driving

Making the decision to drink and drive can have a permanent and devastating impact not only on your life, but on the lives of others. Since 1991, the Safe Sober Prom Night program has worked hard to impart this message to young people throughout the Piedmont Triad. Safe Sober Prom Night uses a mixture of positive peer pressure, motivational speeches and in-person visits to encourage students to remain drug and alcohol free on their prom night. To date, over 500,000 high school students have signed the SSPN Do It Right! Pledge.

One person who is all too familiar with the consequences of drinking and driving is Luly Beckles, whose son Joshua was killed 10 years ago in a drunk driving accident. Joshua was riding his bike when the reckless and negligent decision of another motorist ended his life, and permanently changed the lives of his friends and family.

Stories like Luly’s are one of the main reasons that David Daggett co-founded Safe Sober Prom Night in 1991. By engaging young people and putting them on the path towards making positive decisions, Safe Sober Prom Night helps to prevent these types of tragic accidents from happening in the future.

If young people are more aware of the terrible consequences of drinking and driving before they are faced with that choice, they will be more prepared to make the right decision.

David Daggett of Daggett Shuler Law recently appeared alongside Luly Beckles on WFMY CBS 2 News to discuss the problem of drinking and driving, and what the Safe Sober Prom Night program is doing to help. You can watch the entire interview below:
